Bypass the introduction, a clumsy and slightly offensive attempt to link the etymological quirks and class implications of ancient languages to the present day. The rest of this book is a pleasure to read. Lipkowitz is at her best when untangling a lyrical string of language evolutions, and these linguistic histories are full of delicious trivia--I had no idea eggplants were once thought to cause insanity! If I had known that I could have gotten a history of the apple in this book, I would not have trudged through Michael Pollan's uninspired retelling in The Botany of Desire.
