Life on Mars - Tracy K. Smith

My first introduction to this volume was through a lovely short poem posted on Berfrois: http://www.berfrois.com/2013/09/the-good-life-tracy-k-smith/

I admired how succintly the contrast between workaday coffee and bread and payday roast chicken and wine captures the yearning for comfort and belonging.

The rest of the volume is more sweeping and celestrial than this short, quiet, domestic poem. Tracy Smith's long poems bound between heaven and earth, and while her allusions to a cold and vast universe may put the descriptions of earthy violence in perspective, they are also granted more rather than less gravity.
