I downloaded this book (for free!) when I was looking for versions of the story of the LaLaurie house in New Orleans. I read Cable's version out loud to a house full of guests: it is a wonderful read, with detailed descriptions of setting and mood that made me quite homesick for New Orleans architecture. Plus, Cable focuses on the deeds that gave the house its notoriety, no tacked-on made-up ghost stories.
